The science of switching off

Nature does something to you. Here's what the research says.

Sleep & recovery

Activities in Nature Improve Sleep Quality

Sleep is essential to our overall health, and research suggests that time spent outdoors, especially during the day, can help regulate our sleep patterns. A study conducted by the University of Colorado Boulder found that people who went camping for a weekend had their biological clocks reset, with the timing of their sleep shifted to align with the natural light-dark cycle. This adjustment can result in improved sleep quality and duration.

That's why we've consciously designed our cabins with your sleep quality in mind: warm lighting, blackout curtains and a big, comfy bed.

Stress & Cortisol Reduction

Nature lowers your stress hormones. Measurably.

Chronic stress isn't just a feeling — it's a physiological state. Cortisol, your primary stress hormone, stays chronically elevated when you're in urban environments: notifications, noise, deadlines, commutes. Over time, this wears down your immune system, disrupts your sleep, and clouds your thinking. Time in nature reverses this. Studies show that even short periods in natural settings significantly lower cortisol, slow heart rate, and reduce blood pressure. The effect is not subtle. It's measurable within minutes.

That's why: No WiFi. No notifications. No agenda. Your nervous system gets to exhale.

Creativity & Cognitive Reset

Spending time in green spaces helps sharpen your mind

Constant connectivity doesn't just distract you — it degrades your ability to think creatively. The brain's default mode network, responsible for insight and imagination, gets suppressed when you're in reactive mode: checking, scrolling, responding.

Researchers at the University of Utah and University of Kansas found that people who spent four days in nature, disconnected from technology, scored 50% higher on creativity tests. The mechanism is simple: when you stop reacting, you start thinking.

That's why we recommend a 4 day stay and offer you a box to lock away your phone.

Mindfulness & Presence

Nature makes it easier to be where you are.

Mindfulness isn't a technique. It's a state — one that urban environments actively work against. The noise, the pace, the visual clutter of modern life keep the mind in planning and threat-detection mode. The present moment becomes inaccessible.

Natural environments do the opposite. Studies show that exposure to nature reduces mind-wandering, lowers activity in the brain regions associated with rumination, and makes it significantly easier to achieve and sustain a state of presence. You don't have to try to be mindful in nature. Nature does the heavy lifting.

That's why our spaces are designed with large windows - to keep the calming connection to nature alive, even while you're inside.

Immune Function

Spending time in nature can boost your immunity

Forest environments release phytoncides — organic compounds emitted by trees that, when inhaled, have a measurable effect on human immune function. Specifically, they increase the activity of natural killer (NK) cells: the immune cells responsible for fighting viruses and abnormal cells.

Research from Japan's Nippon Medical School found that a three-day forest immersion significantly elevated NK cell activity — and that the effect lasted for more than 30 days after returning to the city. Fresh air, it turns out, is not a metaphor.

That's why we offer you a yoga mat you can use on our large terraces. And you can obviously just go and take a hike in nature.

Longevity

Time in nature can increase your life span.

The cumulative effect of nature exposure — better sleep, lower cortisol, stronger immunity, restored attention — compounds over time. A landmark study of women published in Environmental Health Perspectives found that those living in the greenest areas had a 12% lower mortality rate compared to those in the least green environments. A Reset at Offgrid isn't an indulgence. It's maintenance.

That's why we hope you'll come back for a second, third and fourth stay :)
